Fishing
The region has fishing suitable for everyone. Within a 40 minute drive from Reefton there are twelve different river systems to choose from. The Inangahua River running along the back of town is easily accessable, it is a medium to large flowing river and has a good population of small to medium wild brown trout. North of Reefton the Waitahu is a low to medium flowing shallow river and Larry's Creek is known for its trophy brown trout.
If you feel like getting further out into the unique environment Lake Daniels is an easy three hour (one way) tramp with a DOC hut at the end if you want to stay at night (or more), this lake is renowned for its rainbow trout.
Don't want to head out on your own? Talk to one of the local guides who start from giving first timer's lessons on the local rivers and right up to if you want something really special helicoptering into a really remote area.
Fishing licences can be purchased in town at the Reefton Sports Centre, it's also worth calling in just to talk to owner Rosemary who is a keen fisher and has a wealth of knowledge on fishing in the region.
Where ever you choose to fish there is a good chance you will be the only angler on the riverbed.
