The Reefton
Visitor Centre can be found right in the centre
of the town on Broadway, Reefton's main street.
More than just a visitor centre, the building
is impressive and holds many quality interpretive
displays of the areas historic and natural environment
- the Quartzopolis Mine complete with audio-visual
interpretation is an accurate and realistic construction
of a genuine quartz (gold) mine, a fully restored
and working winding engine (circa 1895) now leads
a more sedate life far from the remote mines in
which it once served, Beech Alive provides an
insight into the areas unique and predominant
beech forest within the surrounding Victoria Conservation
Park.
As well as providing for information both locally
and throughout New Zealand, the centre offers
a vast array of quality souvenirs and gifts, local
arts and crafts, an exhibition area, internet,
and booking service for all accommodation, transport
and activities.

Linked to the
district office computer at Westport, the Reefton
Service Centre can offer most Buller District
Council services-from rates payments to dog registration.
Building / property records for the Inangahua
Ward are stored and records are held for the Boatmans
and Reefton Cemetaries. There is a resident engineer
/ building inspector.
The Reefton Library is on site with its service
including audio books and public access to a computer
for word processing, spreadsheets, internet and
email.
The Postal Agency is on site also with stamps,
postcards, packaging, phone cards, courier and
mail services. Agents for Telecom and Trustpower
account payments.
Also the agent for Land Transport Safety Authority
(LTSA) for vehicle registration, road user charges
and allied activities.

Heath Medical Centre services includes ACC consultations,
cervical screening, blood taking, ear syringing, wound
care, immunisations, and all general practice
consultations.

Reefton Area

REEFTON (Globe Progress) GOLD MINE

The Globe Progress Gold Mine is located approximately 7 kilometres southeast of the township of Reefton. The mine is owned by OceanaGold Corporation, which also operates the Macraes mine in Otago and is by far the largest gold producer in New Zealand.
The mine was commissioned in 2007 and currently employs about 180 direct employees and contractors, producing 75,000 to 85,000 ounces of gold in concentrate every year.

'Around the Globe' Reefton Gold Mine Tours
Offering a unique opportunity to go right into Oceana Gold's open pit mine here in Reefton. Climb your way from alongside the Inangahua River up 300m to the open pit gold mine, nestled nearby the Victoria Ranges in Victoria Conservation Park . At the mine drive along the haul roads, at the lookout point, watch the 100 tonne trucks in the ever increasing pit, then climb up and through the processing plant to see the stages how gold is retrieved from the gold bearing ore unearthed in the pit. En route to the mine we discover how gold was mined historically at the Blacks Point Museum's gold stamper battery. Scheduled tours leave at 1.30pm Tuesday - Sunday from The Broadway Tearooms & Bakery on Reefton's main street, Broadway. Allow 2 1/2 hours, $45/adult; $28/school aged child; $120 family (up to 2 adults and 3 children). Bookings essential - group bookings welcomed.
