The Reefton Visitor Centre can be found right in the centre of the town on Broadway, Reefton's main street. More than just a visitor centre, the building is impressive and holds many quality interpretive displays of the areas historic and natural environment - the Quartzopolis Mine complete with audio-visual interpretation is an accurate and realistic construction of a genuine quartz (gold) mine, a fully restored and working winding engine (circa 1895) now leads a more sedate life far from the remote mines in which it once served, Beech Alive provides an insight into the areas unique and predominant beech forest within the surrounding Victoria Conservation Park.

Winding Engine

Quartzopolis Mine

The Holman Winding Engine
- Goldmining operations centre on it; miners lives depended on it. This steam-driven winding engine was used to raise the gold-bearing rock which they blasted from quartz reefs. Thick wire rope, wound tightly around the drums, hauled cages up and down the mine shaft.

Quartzopolis Mine
- A replica gold (quartz) mine of the Reefton Goldfields area, complete with shaft, adit, trucks, steam-powered drill and an informative audio-visual interpretation.

As well as providing for information both locally and throughout New Zealand, the centre offers a vast array of quality souvenirs and gifts, local arts and crafts, an exhibition area, internet, and a free booking service for all accommodation, transport and activities.

Our friendly and enthusiastic staff look forward to your visit.
